AMBASSADOR OF THE REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE  TO QATAR

Ambassador Amara Sheikh Mohammed Sowa was appointed on 15th November 2024 by H.E. President Dr. Julius Maada Bio as Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Sierra Leone to the United States of America with concurrent accreditation to Brazil, Canada, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas,Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Jamaica, the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Republic of Chile, and Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

He served as the Deputy Permanent Representative for Political Affairs in the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Sierra Leone to the United Nations from November 2022 to November 2024. H.E. Sowa was also the Alternate Permanent Representative on the Security Council. He specifically handled files relating to the Americas, Eastern Europe, Women, Peace & Security, Education, Food Security and Climate Change. In the United Nations General Assembly, his responsibilities covered all issues relating to the Second, Third and Fourth Committees in the United Nations, which included, but were not limited to, the Peace Building Commission, the Financing for Development, ECOSOC, Commission for Social Development, Commission on the Status of Women, C-24, g77+,etc. Ambassador Sowa also followed up on issues related to the Transforming Education Summit and the Summit of the Future.

Before the above appointment, Ambassador Sowa served as the National Programme Coordinator of the Government’s flagship programme – the Free Quality School Education Programme (2018-2022), where he led in the design and implementation of the Programme, succeeding in laying a solid foundation for the transformation of the Education system in Sierra Leone.

Ambassador Sowa also worked in the Decentralisation Secretariat(in the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development), serving as Regional Coordinator (2005–2012) and Resident Technical Facilitator (2015-2018), where he contributed to the successful implementation of the World Bank-funded Institutional Reform and Capacity Building Project. He also has considerable experience working with NGOs, having led project teams at PLAN International and Leonard Cheshire Disability.

He has also been a high school teacher, university lecturer and administrator.

Ambassador Amara Sowa holds a Bachelor’s degree with Honoursin English (1991) and a Master’s degree in Development (2010) from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, and Njala University, Sierra Leone, respectively.

He is married with three children. He loves reading, travelling andwatching soccer.

Mission Statement

The Embassy’s principal mission, consistent
 with the Foreign Policy objectives of Sierra Leone as enshrined in the 1991 
Constitution, which, inter alia, seek the promotion and protection of Sierra Leone’s 
national interest, is to consolidate and promote the existing excellent bilateral relations 
between the two countries to the mutual benefit of the peoples of the United States and Sierra Leone;
 the promotion of business, trade and cultural relations, and to seek the interest of Sierra 
Leone nationals in the United States.
